Typical Distribution Facility General Arrangement

In a typical Distribution Center we try to design a layout with a primary flow through the facility as shown below. We try to locate reserve and bulk storage nearer the receiving operation, with the order selection  and packing nearer to the shipping operation.

A Zone Routing System can be either PLC or computer directed system and is best utilized for picking small products in less that case lot quantities.

If there is is a large quantity of moderate and slow velocity products capable of being efficiently stored in shelving, Zone Routing may offer some improvement in order picking efficiencies.
